Teen Drivers

Teen drivers have the highest crash risk of any age group, whether it is property damage or fatal accidents. The reason for this is due to driving error, speeding, single vehicle crashes due to losing control of vehicle, passengers distracting the inexperienced driver, alcohol, night driving, and low belt use.

After they have a license, teens are still gaining experience as new drivers. To help keep them safe, establish rules about when, where, how, and with whom they may drive.

  • Limit the number of passengers in the car. They are more likely to have trouble focusing on the road with laughter, music, food, and other distractions.
  • Establish and enforce a curfew
  • Insist that the teen and passengers where a seat belt
  • Limit or supervise your teen’s driving during peak times. The highest number of driving crashes occur on a Friday or Saturday night or early morning.
  • Prohibit driving or riding with others under the influence of drugs or alcohol
