On Ice or Snow:
- Bridges and Overpasses Freeze First. Slow down and avoid sudden land changes when traveling over bridges and overpasses.
- Keep windows clear of snow and ice.
- Keep your speed steady and slow
- Use brakes cautiously. Abrupt braking can cause break lock-up, which causes you to lose control of the steering.
- If you get stuck in the snow, straighten the wheels and accelerate slowly. Avoid spinning tires, the heat friction caused by the spinning tires melts the snow and creates a thin layer of ice.
- Use sand under the wheels to increase traction if you get a little stuck.
- Never stand in traffic or push a car that is stuck, someone else could lose control of their vehicle and seriously injure or even kill you.
When it Rains:
- Turn on your head lights at first sign of rain.
- Use the defroster or air conditioner, to keep windows and mirrors clear
- Slow Down, roads become slippery as water mixes with road oils, grease, and dirt.
During Foggy Road Conditions:
- Stay to the right of the roadway
- Turn on your headlights - day or night to low beam
- If fog thickens, put on your hazard flashers to aid others coming from behind you to see you better
